…And The Winners Will Be…

Don’t expect a lot of surprises at the “Oscar So White” Party, also known as the 92nd Annual Academy Awards. The evening is likely to play out the way it always does: predictable frontrunners taking the stage, bad songs being performed badly,  and an endless array of montages, causing the telecast to run twice as long as it deserves to. There is buzz that PARASITE, the superb South Korean import could stun and take Best Picture. But is Hollywood really ready to admit that the “best film” of the year wasn’t made within the Hollywood system?  Or will Parasite benefit from an “Oscar So White” backlash? The safe bet is still 1917. It’s the kind of film that has always appealed to that society of old white men. It has Oscar written all over it.

A scenery chewing Joachin Phoenix will best a nuanced Antonio Banderas. Brad Pitt and Lara Dern will score in supporting categories. And Renee Zellweger, a past winner for Best Supporting Actress, will walk away with the prize for Best Actress for her dreadful turn as Judy Garland.

Director Boog Joon-Ho is the favorite for Best International Film, but it is possible he will score in another category. Exactly where that surprise win is more likely to occur is uncertain. He is nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay. With the BAFTA’s and Director’s Guild honoring Sam Mendes, Ho is more likely to score in the writing category, possibly defeating an equally deserving Quentin Tarantino. May the best man win.
